Pros

With a torquey V8, a low range for the four-wheel-drive system, and a fully boxed steel frame, the 2008 Infiniti QX56 pairs a luxurious, roomy premium SUV interior with serious truck-like towing (up to 9,000 pounds) and hauling ability. The QX56 also has a very roomy interior, with space for up to eight and class-leading second-row legroom.

Model Highlights

The 2008 Infiniti QX56 is powered by a 5.6L DOHC V8 engine making 320 horsepower and 393 lb-ft of torque, hooked up to a five-speed automatic transmission. The engine has an aluminum block with cast-iron liners, molybdenum-coated pistons, a forged steel crankshaft, and heavy-duty cooling system for durability, and it is especially well-suited to towing or serious off-roading as it makes nearly 90 percent of its peak torque below 2,500 rpm. Rear- and four-wheel-drive versions of the QX56 are offered. The 4WD models feature the so-called All-Mode system, which employs an electronically controlled part-time transfer case and low range. In the "Auto" mode, when extra traction is needed, the system can send up to 50 percent of engine torque to the front wheels. The QX56 includes a long list of safety features as standard, including the VDC electronic stability control system, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. An auto-leveling air suspension is also standard and helps maintain uniform ground clearance and departure angle when off-roading or towing. Front seat-mounted side air bags, roof-mounted side-curtain air bags with rollover protection for all rows, and front-seat active head restraints are also included. With three rows of seating, the QX56 provides space for up to eight, while the power-folding third row folds flat easily when not in use. The QX56 is only sold in a single, very well appointed model. The standard equipment list is impressive, including leather upholstery, a Burr-Brown audio system with 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive for MP3s, a navigation system, a rearview monitor, and a power-folding third-row seat. Major options include, intelligent cruise control, a rear entertainment system, and a second row split bench seat.

Model News

The Infiniti QX56 gets a major revision for 2008, with new front and rear fascias, new front fog lights, a new roof rack, and larger standard wheels-20-inch chromed alloy wheels with heavy-duty tires. The interior has been further refined with a redesigned gauge cluster, a larger glove compartment, new real woodgrain trim, illuminated steering-wheel controls, and an Intelligent Key entry system. There's also a new power-folding third-row seat available. The sound system is now an upgraded Burr-Brown unit with Music Box hard-drive MP3 storage. Also, a new Infiniti Mobile Entertainment System is available. The system has a larger screen than the previous navigation system and includes XM NavTraffic real-time traffic information. A new Stone interior color is available, and two new exterior colors, Lakeshore Slate and Serengeti Sand, join the lineup for 2008.
